A Statement from Spada on the NZFC’s Decision to End Funding for Screen Guilds

This is a significant decision for Aotearoa New Zealand’s screen industry. The NZ Film Commission has provided core support to many of the sector’s guilds and organisations for a long time, and the impact of withdrawing that funding will be felt across the industry.

Spada understands the considerable financial pressures the NZFC is operating under, and the decision does not come as a complete surprise. Nevertheless, its ramifications will be significant, particularly at a time when the domestic screen sector is already under considerable pressure.

It is another reminder of the need to strengthen the foundations of our domestic screen industry and ensure it has sustainable sources of support. That includes progressing measures such as a modern regulatory framework for international streaming platforms, so that services benefiting from New Zealand audiences also contribute to the creation of New Zealand content.

Spada will continue to advocate strongly on behalf of our members and work constructively with the screen funding organisations, Government and the wider industry on the key issues affecting producers and their ability to keep making great local content.
