Change To NZSPR and Shortland Street

Minister Goldsmith announced earlier this week that the Government would take “immediate action” to support New Zealand’s media and content production sectors – including allowing the 40% New Zealand Screen Production Rebate to apply to Shortland Street, letting platforms earn advertising revenue on Sunday mornings, and continuing to progress the Fair Digital News Bargaining Bill through Parliament.

Following the Government’s decision to adjust the rules for applications to the Screen Production Rebate (SPR) making Shortland Street now eligible*, NZ On Air has also approved a $3m injection of public media funding to help secure another year of the show.

As a result South Pacific Pictures CEO Kelly Martin has issued a statement via social media confirming that, as agreed between TVNZ and SPP, Shortland Street will air three nights a week from 2025, with support from NZ On Air and the New Zealand Screen Production Rebate.

Shortland Street remains an important part of the cultural landscape of Aotearoa New Zealand, and is a valuable part of the local screen eco-system.
