Boost to Screen Production Recovery Fund & Cultural Sector Emergency Relief Fund

Announcement from Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage

The Screen Production Recovery Fund has been boosted by a further $15 million.

  • $7.9 million of that funding allocated to the New Zealand Film Commission
  • $7.1 million allocated to New Zealand on Air

“Internationally, Omicron is having a significant impact on the film industry, with cast/crew sickness in some cases causing productions to shut down, resulting in higher costs. Aotearoa New Zealand’s screen industry will not be immune from these pressures, so we are acting now to provide extra support for this key sector of our economy.

“The Screen Production Fund will receive a boost to enable an extension of the fund through to 31 December 2022, to maximise production activity and minimise the impacts of any COVID-19 outbreaks." - Minister Sepuloni, Arts, Culture and Heritage

Executive Director of the Screen Production and Development Association (SPADA) Sandy Gildea has also welcomed the announcement. “With an uncertain few months ahead it is good to know funds are available, giving domestic production companies, and international financiers, confidence the support is there should it be needed.”

  • A one-off grant of $5,000 will be available to eligible self-employed individuals/sole traders in the arts and cultural sector who have lost income or opportunities to work.
  • The limit on funding for individual organisations has been increased from $100,000 to $300,000.

** Following today's announcement updates are being made to the criteria and application process to reflect these changes, however you can access the Cultural Sector Emergency Relief Fund HERE - NOTE FROM MINISTRY 3 / 2 /22: We expect to provide further information on the criteria for the $5,000 grant for self-employed individuals/sole traders by mid-February and open for applications by the end of February. This is to enable the Ministry to seek feedback from sector representatives on the final design of the scheme, and configure the systems required to support the application process.
