SPADA Masterclass Series (WATCH NOW)

The SPADA Masterclass Series 2020 - 2021 will play host to a range of discussions with industry experts which focus on a different aspect of producing in each session. Taking place during a year of ongoing challenges and change, each of the Masterclasses in the series will remain as accessible as possible by being delivered online, and made available free of charge to SPADA members and non-members alike.

Masterclass #1: The Three Cs of TV - Creativity, Clarity and Courtesy

Host Irene Gardiner (Producer) leads a discussion by experienced industry panellists covering some specific considerations of producing for TV. Joining Irene for the discussion are industry panellists Julian Arahanga (Producer & Director, Awa Films), Alice Shearman (Executive Director, New Zealand Writers Guild - Puni Taatuhi o Aotearoa), Kay Ellmers (Senior Commissioner RNZ), Amie Mills (Head of Funding, NZ On Air) and Tony Manson (Former Commissioner at TVNZ 1 / Freelance Executive Producer). The first Masterclass is aimed at progressing producers (but open to producers at all levels).

Masterclass #2: 'SIS' The Comedy - A Case Study

Discover how the smash hit comedy special ‘Sis’ came to be commissioned by Comedy Central and Prime, and its impact on Aotearoa and beyond.

This Masterclass is aimed at anyone with an interest in diverse and inclusive storytelling. Hosted by Pan-Asian Screen Collective co-founder and Screenwriter Shuchi Kothari, our fantastic line up of panellists are: Hanelle Harris (Producer and Director, Culture Factory) Karin Williams (Executive Producer, Multinesia) Dana Youngman and Annie Murray (Commissioners, Prime) and Daniel Morrison (Viacom, Australia).

Masterclass #3: 'Film Distribution in a COVID-19 World

How has COVID-19 affected film distribution in 2020, and what might we expect from here? Join host Jill Macnab (Vendetta Productions) for this Masterclass discussion with guest panellists David White ('This Town'), Kerry Warkia ('The Legend of Baron To'a'), Luke Murray (Distributor, Madman), and Jasmin McSweeney (NZ Film Commission), who have each been involved with a theatrical release in 2020 This SPADA Masterclass was brought to you by ANZSA.

Masterclass #4: 'The Business of Creativity'

Join host DK (Creative Leadership NZ, TEDx Wellington) for this SPADA Masterclass exploring how to develop and lead robust and sustainable businesses in the creative sectors. Guest panelists Rhonda Kite (Kiwa Media Group), Aliesha Staples (Staples VR) and Dan Milward (Gamefroot) will discuss how creativity is cultivated and ignited in their organisations, along with how it is packaged as a robust and viable business.

Aimed at supporting screen producers, this SPADA Masterclass will be of value to anyone anyone operating a business within a creative industry.

Masterclass #5: SPADA & XE Foreign Exchange Workshop

A strong New Zealand dollar can create challenges for screen producers, and NZ’s success in managing COVID and the Kiwi dollar’s status as a commodity/growth currency has ensured that the currency has been one of the strongest performers.In this workshop Stuart Talman of Xe Money Transfer provides an update on the state of play with the Kiwi dollar, explains why hedging will be important throughout 2021, and along with SPADA co-president Richard Fletcher, offers practical tips to manage exchange rate volatility.

Masterclass #6: SPADA & NZWG present THE WRITER / PRODUCER RELATIONSHIP

An exploration of the Writer / Producer Relationship, including insight and tips on how to develop your own strong and successful creative collaborations. Hosting the Masterclass are Karin Williams (SPADA) and Kathryn Burnett (NZWG). Our guest panelists include writer / producer collaborators Nick Ward & Michelle Turner, and Tusi Tamasese & Catherine Fitzgerald.
