Lanita Ririnui

Kaiwhakahau Hōtaka Content Commissioner - Māori Television

During her 20 year career Lanita Ririnui (Ngāiterangi, Ngāti Ranginui, Ngāpuhi, Kuki Āirani) has directed and produced many works for TVNZ, Māori Television and www.thecoconet.nz across genres of entertainment, lifestyle, documentary and sport.

Majoring in Television, with a Bachelor of Communication Studies from AUT, her experience has always been kaupapa driven, immersed in development and stories that bring communities together. Māori, Pasifika and rangatahi voices have always been a driving force in her work. As a co-founder & director of Through The Fire Ltd Lanita has a background as an independent producer, director, writer, presenter/MC.

Lanita co-produced the very first interactive site showcasing stories of Poi in Aotearoa (www.poi360.nz) which led to special presentations and panel talks on VR & Digital Media at ImagineNATIVE Film Festival in Toronto, Canada & Māorilands Film Festival, NZ as well as a special presentation at Wairoa Film Festival NZ. The site featured in VR digicades at Halifax Film Festival, and it also includes multi-award winning webseries 'Poi - Hopes and Dreams' (www.poihopesanddreams.nz) which was selected for film festivals around the world (including Best New Media/Webseries at the Los Angeles International Film Series, Best webseries at Canada Diversity Film Festival, Winner Inspirational Series at Best Shorts Competition, Best Factual Series & Best Cinematography at NZWebfest). 

Lanita produced the first Pasifika Dance 360 short film, 'Fangirl' for the NZ Film Commission currently on the world festival circuit and museum exhibitions.

Inspired by stories of identity and cultural connection in contemporary society, she has a high interest in people sharing their own stories and her artistic works are predominantly influenced by momentum and the female element. She is also the creator of mana wahine artworks, moko fashion design and the art gallery installation #polydollytalk.
